Yamaha Rhino Rollover Accidents Prompt Numerous Lawsuits

Posted on Apr 20, 2009

Defective Yamaha Rhino off-road vehicles have been linked to numerous rollover accidents, which has prompted hundreds of lawsuits on behalf of the victims.

U.S. regulators began an investigation into these off-road vehicles last November and the investigation eventually led to the recall of more than 145,000 Yamaha Rhinos.

Critics believe that the Yamaha Rhino is more likely to be involved in a rollover accident than other off-road vehicles because of design defects.  The Yamaha Rhino is top heavy and has tires that are extremely narrow, which creates a greater risk of the vehicle tipping and rolling while going through a turn.  The risk of rollover is high even when the off-road vehicle is traveling at a slow speed on a flat surface.  Critics also claim that the Yamaha Rhino does not protect passengers’ legs in the event of a rollover accident.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) investigated 50 Rhino accidents that caused 46 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries.  According to the CPSC, more than two-thirds of the cases investigated involved rollovers.

Three models have been recalled, including all Rhino 450, 660 and 700 models distributed since fall of 2003.  Yamaha announced in the recall that it will repair the vehicles free of charge, which will include an installation of a spacer on the rear wheels and the removal of the rear anti-sway bar to help minimize the risk of rollover.  In addition, Yamaha is offering a free helmet offer to the owners of recalled Rhinos.
