Wrong Way Driver Kills Benton Man

Posted on Mar 02, 2009

A woman traveling the wrong direction on Interstate 75 in Loudon County collided head on with another driver early morning on Sunday, March 1, 2009, which ultimately resulted in one death.

Ruby M. Lloyd, 31, of Rockwood, was driving a 2005 Toyota 4-Runner north in the southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 82 shortly before 3:00 AM when she hit a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, head on, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report.  At the time of the accident Lloyd was entering a curve heading the wrong way.

Roy Duane Branum Jr., 62, of Benton, was fatally injured in the tragic accident.  He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.  Lloyd was also injured, but no details were provided regarding her condition.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report, Lloyd had been drinking alcohol at the time of the accident. Lloyd was believed to be intoxicated, which could have been a significant factor in the devastating accident. At the time of the collision, both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

THP Trooper Carey Hixson said that no charges have been filed yet, but an additional report is pending.

The crash forced troopers to shut down all northbound and southbound lanes of traffic until the crash could be cleared around 6:30 AM.

Unfortunately, thousands of people are killed in drunk driving accidents across the country every year.
