Tractor Trailer Accident South of the Dyer County Line

Posted on Apr 02, 2009

Last week, a tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 51, when it overturned and landed on the median.  The Tennessee truck accident occurred just two miles south of the Dyer County line at about 12:25 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

The driver of the large truck was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.  No immediate medical treatment was needed for the truck driver.

Allen Heil, a Redbud, Illinois resident, was driving behind the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash.  According to Heil, the driver was trying to avoid a ladder that was in the road.  As the driver attempted to swerve around it, the rig fishtailed and the driver lost control of his vehicle.

“I’ve seen a lot of accidents, but this is the first time I’ve witnessed one like this,” said Heil.

A ladder was at the accident scene and lay on the shoulder of the road.

Captain Joel Deal, the Tennessee Highway Patrol captain of the Memphis district, said that objects in the road, including ladders, pose a serious threat to motorists.  He also said that people carrying such items in their trucks need to have them tied down.

“People are responsible for their cargo and what’s in their vehicle.  If an object falls off a truck and causes a wreck, that person could be held liable for the wreck,” said Deal.

The accident is currently being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
