Tennessee Fatal Truck Accident Closes I-40 Bridge

Posted on May 20, 2009

The Hernando DeSoto Bridge was closed for hours following a fatal car accident.  It was later reopened in all lanes after the massive traffic backup.

According to traffic investigators with the Memphis Police Department, one man was fatally injured following an accident involving a tractor-trailer.  Officials said that the man’s car had broken down in the far right lane of the bridge and that he had gotten out of his vehicle.  A tractor-trailer then hit him from behind, causing his death.  The tragic Tennessee truck accident took place on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

The westbound lanes of the bridge were shut down for two hours near the Tennessee-Arkansas state line shortly after noon, while officials investigated the scene to determine what caused the crash and crews cleaned up the wreckage.

Memphis Police worked with Arkansas law enforcement to determine the identity of the man who was killed.  The 1994 Mazda 626 he was driving was registered to a 58-year-old man from Piggott, Arkansas, but police could not verify whether the victim was the one who was listed on the registration.  Memphis Police were planning to verify his identity through Arkansas driver’s records.
