Should gulf oysters be sold during summer months?

Posted on Oct 30, 2009

AP New Orleans 10/28 - The FDA has proposed a ban on the sale of gulf oysters harvested during the summer months unless they are treated for a deadly bacteria. About 15 people each year die from vibrio vulnificus, a deadly bacteria found in gulf oysters during the summer months. Oyster fisherman and restaurant owners claim the ban is unnecessary and that the FDA should focus on foods that are likely to cause more risks such as peanut butter and e. coli in beef.
