May is Motorcycle Safety and National Bicycle Month

Posted on May 07, 2009

The weather in Nashville is getting warmer, which means more people will be riding their motorcycles and bicycles.  It therefore makes sense that May is Motorcycle Safety and National Bicycle Month.

The Tennessee Department of Safety hosted an event at Bumpus Harley Davidson in Murfreesboro to kick off the month.  According to national statistics, the number of people killed in motorcycle accidents has tripled across the country.

Bob Edwards with the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation said that “it’s up to the riders themselves to ride defensively, ride within their own limits, don’t get crazy out there.  We have fast motorcycles, but you don’t always have to show off.”

Tennessee requires that motorcyclists and their passengers wear motorcycle helmets and protective gear.  However, even with the protective gear and helmets, one out of seven fatal accidents last year involved motorcycles.

One of the reasons that motorcycle riding is so dangerous is that motorcycles are harder to see than the standard vehicle.  According to the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation, left hand turns by cars are the number one cause of motorcycle fatalities.  The Motorcycle Awareness Foundation has asked drivers to look both ways twice before turning.

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, contact a Nashville motorcycle accident lawyer at Phillip Miller & Associates at (615) 356-2000 or (800) 337-HURT.
