Man Dies in Tennessee Tractor-Trailer Accident

Posted on Mar 08, 2009

A local trucker was killed when his tractor-trailer flipped over and crashed on a highway in Tennessee.  Surmukh Singh, a 54-year-old man, was driving to Brownsville, Tennessee, heading south on the rural highway Tennessee 210 shortly before 1:00 PM when the cab rolled.  According to some witnesses, the cab went airborne and then slammed back into the ground.

Surmukh, who worked for G & K Express trucking company, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  His older brother, Milka said that he suffered head injuries.

Police do not believe that speeding or impaired driving were contributing factors in the fatal truck wreck.  Surmukh has been a truck driver for 15 years and had owned his own company in Hamilton called GTL.  At the time of the accident, he had been working for G & K for three months and was considered a helpful, hard worker.

Tejinder Singh, Surmukh’s friend had met him for tea just two days before the fatal crash.  “We sat for three hours, had tea, were talking – I didn’t realize that would be the last meeting we would have,” said Tejinder, who had known Surmukh for 30 years.

Surmukh moved to Hamilton from Punjab, India in 1976.  In 2006, he and two other people were charged with storming the Dundas home of an executive of the nearby Sikh temple.  However, charges were later dropped.

Surmukh was married to Bhupinder Lakian and had three children, ages 30, 27 and 23.  His funeral was held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home in Burlington.
