FDA Powerless to Regulate Supplement Industry

Boston Globe 11/2/09 - The $25 billion dollar supplement industry is largely unregulated. The FDA can only act when there are reports of bad reactions by users, and that may only occur after large amounts of the supplement are sold and consumed. The FDA has no legal right to make supplement manufacturers prove their supplements are safe before they are placed on the market, and as a result there have been instances where supplements were sold that contained heavy metals, toxic plant materials, and bacteria.
