Astrazeneca Tries to Bottle Up the Seroquel Lawsuits

Astra Zeneca, a London based drug manufacuturer has over 9000 pending lawsuits over its antipsychotic drug Seroquel which is alleged to cause diabetes. Seroquel, which generated sales of $4.45 billion in 2008, is the company’s second-biggest seller after the ulcer treatment Nexium.

The drugmaker is opposing a request to end a judge’s consolidated handling of the suits and send them back to home courts for trial.

Lawyers for former users contend they are ready to go to trial on their claims that the company downplayed Seroquel’s diabetes risk. The first state-court case over Seroquel is set to go to trial in Delaware in June.
