The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is charged with protecting the public from unsafe products, has created a list of some of the most dangerous children’s products that were previously available on the market. This list includes various items, such as cribs, a bassinet and play yard, all of which led to the deaths of infants. If you are a parent, grandparent or other caregiver, you need to be aware of these defective children’s products, so that you can protect your loved ones.
Recalled Cribs
In 2007, approximately one million Simplicity cribs were recalled following the deaths of two infants. The deaths were the result of the drop-side rail being installed upside down. This drop side failure, which led to the deaths and seven infant entrapments, was caused by a design flaw in the hardware and the crib.
Unfortunately, the Simplicity crib was not the only one that contained a serious manufacturing flaw. In 2008, Delta Enterprise Corp. announced a voluntary recall of approximately 985,000 drop side cribs after it received a report of the death of an 8-month-old child. The infant suffocated when the drop side of the crib detached. It was later discovered that there were missing safety pegs. According to a press release, when the safety pegs are not installed, there is a significant entrapment and suffocation hazard.
Recalled Bassinet
Simplicity Inc. recalled its convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets following two strangulation deaths. A 5-month-old and 4-month-old infant were killed when they each became caught between the Simplicity bassinet’s metal bars. A major design flaw of the bassinet was later found to be the cause of the two infants’ deaths.
Recalled Play Yard
A play yard by Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. has also made the “most wanted” list on the CPSC’s website. About 425,000 Kolcraft infant play yards were recalled following the death of a child. The recall was initiated after a 10-month-old boy was strangled by the changing table’s restraint strap that was hanging into the Sesame Beginnings Travel Play Yard by Kolcraft.
It is a sad fact that as consumers, we are forced to rely on manufacturers that sometimes place unsafe products on the market. If you or your child has been injured by a defective toy, crib, bassinet, play yard or other product, you may be able to hold the manufacturer liable.
