There are a variety of shortcuts that bad trucking companies take that result in unsafe driving. When the first priority of a company is delivering goods on time, safety becomes secondary. Many lawsuits against trucking companies focus on their negligent hiring and retention of unsafe drivers or their failure to provide training in safety and safe vehicle operation.    Companies sometimes knowingly encourage unsafe driving by allowing their drivers to operate vehicle with unsafe, poorly maintained equipment, or ignore drivers who violate traffic laws or hours of operation – as long as the goods are delivered on time.

Other cases may focus on the truck as much or more than the driver. There is a financial incentive to keep trucks on the road. When vehicles are inspected while on the road and found to have an “out-of-service” condition, more than a third of the time the problem is with the trucks braking system.    When the goal is all about delivering the load, shortcuts on loading can create hazards for others. The cargo being hauled by a truck may weigh up to 80,000 pounds. If truck’s load isn’t distributed or secured properly, the truck can become difficult to control.
