Motorcycle-related deaths still on the rise

OK fellow bikers.  There is a new report from NHTSA that while showing a decrease in the number of people who lost their lives in the four wheelers by 4% in 2007,  also indicated a troubling new statistic of an increase in motorcycle deaths upwards at 6.6%.  These percentages seem small but when broken down they translate to over 5100 bikers no longer with us.  Not a good thing.
Based on this study it appears that motorcyclists are about 35 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash while driving at night. (Time to take a close look at our lighting and night riding gear perhaps?)  I don't know about the rest of you but I'm liking the extra lighting kit I put on my bagger more and more everyday, or should I say every night?

According to the final version of NHTSA’s report,

"A number of factors in motorcycle crashes appear every year.
These include new and older riders, alcohol-related crashes, speed,
driving at night, larger engines and a lack of helmet use. NHTSA
estimates helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries
to motorcyclists."

Use good judgment.
