Gray Hair and Harleys

A motorcycle accident used to be a young man's way to the morgue. It was the teen rebel living fast and dying young, the Leader of the Pack roaring off to his doom.

That was another century. Now crash victims are increasingly likely to have gray hair and grandchildren.

While motorcycle fatalities among all riders have gone up in the past few years, deaths among those 40 and up have more than doubled. Riders in that age group now account for almost half of all fatalities.

Statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the extent of the change:

  • 10-Year Trend by Age Group Shows

  • Significant Increases in use by Older Population

  • Most with 50+ Age Group
I myself am an older 50+ biker.  I have been riding consistently however since my early teen years.  I have never taken a 30 year break and decided to get back into being a biker at age 40-50 after having not ridden for decades.  Therein could be the problem.  Lets face it, we don't heal like we used to.  I also firmly believe that many years of consistently being a rider trains you to do things by instinct, thereby offsetting (to some degree) the deterioration of reflex, sight, sound, coordination and other motor skills that seem to fade with age.

That's my opinion.  Ride Safe-Loco Logan

This is purely my opinion, not legal advice. I am an investigator, not a lawyer. For legal advice, please contact Phillip Miller & Associates at 1-800-337-HURT.
